About Mandevilla

Mandevilla flower is perennial woody vine which belongs to the family of Apocynaceae. It has about 100 species. Its origin can be traced to tropical and sub-tropical regions of Central and South America. The plant was introduced in temperate countries where they are popular as house and garden plants due to their beautiful flowers. It is sometimes referred to as Brazilian Jasmine. It grows to a height of about 50 centimeters. It is a climbing plant which twines on its support. It requires rich and well drained sandy soils. It is planted from cuttings. Growth hormones can be applies to the cuttings to induce growth. The cuttings produce seedling after 1 month. Manure can be added to the soil to provide humus and improve drainage. Young plants should be provided with stakes for support. To induce bushiness the tip of the young plant can be cut off. Pests that attack the plant include whiteflies, spider mites, scales and mealy bugs.

Mandevilla flower is spectacularly beautiful. The flower may be yellow, pink, white and red depending on the species. It produces abundant flowers which have very sweet-smelling fragrance. The plant makes a beautiful house and garden plant.

In temperate countries they are grown as house plants and can be put outdoors in warm weather but have to be brought indoor at the onset of autumn. It grows well in hanging baskets, pots and tubs. The plant cannot tolerate temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant cannot tolerate frost.

The main species are Alice du pont and Laxa. Laxa is also referred to as Chilian Jasmine. The leaves of Alice du pont are 8 to 20 centimeters in length. They are oval in shape and dark green dark green in colour. They also appear glossy. The flowers are shaped like a trumpet and are produced in clusters. They measure 5 – 10 centimeters width and are pink in colour. Small plants of 10 centimeters tall will also produce flowers. It can be propagated in hanging baskets. The tip of the new plant can be cut off to induce dense growth. The leaves of Chilean jasmine are opposite, oblong, and heart shaped at the base. They are dark green on top and gray green underside. They measure 5 to 15 centimeters in length. It produces clustered white flowers which measure about 5 centimeters wide. The flowers are shaped like a trumpet and have a characteristic scent.

Other species are Red Riding Hood which produces dark red flowers, Summer Snow which produces sparkling white flowers measuring 8 to 10 centimeters and has dark green glossy leaves, Yellow which produces wide bright yellow flowers.

Mandevilla are sometimes called or confused with dipladenias. There are over a 100 varieties of mandevillas which range from mostly tropical to subtropical “vine-ing” plants.

Sun Parasol Mandevilla can be divided into three groups:

Original Group:
Sun Parasol Original has a neat, upright, compact growth habit with good basal branching and glossy green foliage. Originals will produce a beautiful flower that is 2 – 3 inches in diameter (flowers are available in Crimson, Pink, Cream Pink and Dark Red.) They are natural climbers and have excellent garden performance. The original group is ideal for container gardeners growing on/in patios, balconies, hanging baskets, landscapes or as a houseplant. In order to ensure success make sure this plant gets lots of light in the winter and summer. Keep plants in well drained soil (DO NOT OVER WATER.)

Giant Group:
Sun Parasol Giant has a vigorous growing habit, with course foliage and is a natural climber. Giants produce a gorgeous flower that is 3 – 5 inches in diameter (flowers are available in White, Pink and Crimson.) Giants are an excellent addition to a garden or a container garden providing a beautiful tropical feeling. The Giants are very versatile and can be used on/in patios, balconies and interior-scapes (with sufficient light.) In order to ensure success (and many blooms) plant in well draining soil and provide lots of light (DO NOT OVER WATER.)

Pretty Group:
Sun Parasol Pretty has small, glossy, thin foliage with a vigorous growing habit. Pretties want to produce flowers and flowers are 2 – 3 inches in diameter (flowers are available in Crimson and Pink.) Because of it vigorous climbing nature Pretties are an excellent candidate for trellises, hanging baskets and containers with all sorts of climbing supports. Different from the other two groups, Pretties want lots of light in the winter and prefer partial shade in the summer months. (For optimum bloom production provide partial shade during the summer months.) Like all the Sun Parasol Mandevilla plant in well drained soil and DO NOT OVER WATER.
